Product Description
These sound segmentation cards, created by Heather Bates, SLP were designed to assist in the development of phonemic awareness skills in your students. In particular, sound segmentation skills are addressed. Sound segmentation is the skill of breaking a word down into its individual sounds. Research has proven that strong segmentation skills are a good predictor of reading success. These cards are different from many other sound segmentation activities that you may find because all vowel sounds are targeted not just short and long vowels. If a student is good at segmenting they should be able to segment a word no matter what the vowel sound is that it contains. Therefore, these cards consist of words that have short vowels, long vowels, /r/ controlled vowels, vowel diphthongs, and vowel diagraphs. 2 types of data sheets have been included for your convenience. You will absolutely love the adorable clip art from PinkCatStudios!!

HOW TO USE:
To use these cards you must copy, cut, and laminate each small picture card (Slides 128-162, for a total of 134 small picture cards). Then use a manipulative such as bingo chips, M&M’s, Skittles, Goldfish, Fruit Loops, etc. As your student says the 1st sound they place a manipulative in the green circle, as they say the medial sound (vowel sound) they place a manipulative in the yellow circle, and as they say the final sound they place a manipulative in the red circle. They can then go back and point to each manipulative as they say each individual sound again. If you are using an edible manipulative you can then have them eat the one that says a specific sound (i.e. If the word was bat, you can have them eat the manipulative that said /a/). This is a great activity to use in small group, whole class, or in centers. I have also included large picture cards to use on the SmartBoard for whole class instruction (Slides 3-127, for a total of 124 large picture cards). You can have your students gently throw bean bags at each circle as they segment the word into its individual sounds.
