3 Tall Tales Writing Activities is designed to help students explore tall tales, exaggerations, hyperbole, and critical thinking skills during writing. There are several tall tale interactive worksheets for students to explore the use of exaggeration in a tall tale. There is also a writing unit on Pecos Bill as well as a fun re-telling writing unit on a Little Red Riding Hood who LOVES to eat!
This packet includes teaching ideas and strategies, a tall tale introduction worksheet for students, a tall tale example worksheet, and a tall tale practice worksheet.
The Pecos Bill Unit has a cover page, two graphic organizers, draft paper for younger and intermediate students, two writing revision worksheets, and portfolio paper for both younger and intermediate students. The Not-So-Little Red Riding Hood Unit also has the equivalent.
Also included are brief extension ideas for teachers to use in the classroom after writing units.
This activity is designed for upper young learners or intermediate learners. It is created with ESL and international classrooms in mind.
Not included in this packet are the Pecos Bill or Little Red Riding Hood stories. Please find a version suitable for your classroom to supplement these writing assignments.
These activities can be done separately. As with most ESL or international classrooms, always space writing projects out over the course of 2-3 instructional times to allow students time to process new information and skills as well as to promote their best thinking.
