1st-.She's a Lady...Or Something- critical analysis on Curley's wife and the treatment of women in the novella. This handout covers her role throughout the entire novella. Also included is a July 2014 Huffingtonpost.com article written by Leighton Meester, "I'm Not a Tart: The Feminist Subtext of Steinbeck's Of Mice and Me" as well as a copy of Steinbeck's 1938 letter to Claire Luce, the first woman to playCurley's wife on stage.
2nd- Of Mice and Men AND Racism- textual analysis on treatment of Crook's and the use of racial epithets in the story. The handout covers the opening chapter, but focuses mainly on chapter 4.
3rd-Of Mice and Men and the American Dream- overview of the American Dream throughout the ages and a survey of student ideas on the subject. The back is a chart asking for textual evidence and analysis of various characters and their interpretation of the American Dream.
I've used these assignments successfully as group work and individually. The page numbers for the cited examples are from the Penguin edition of the novella.
