With this activity, students are given 5 numbers (5-9 digits each) and are given the directions to create 3 truths and a lie about the numbers. For each statement, students will pick 2 of the numbers to compare both in words and with mathematical symbols.
ex. (345 < 543) 345 is less than 543
Having students create both true statements and false statements requires that the students think more in-depth about the place values within the numbers. This activity also requires that students create comparison number sentences using <, >, and =, while also pushing them to write their thoughts out in words.
This activity could be used as a partner activity, small group lesson, independent practice, assessment, homework, or reteach.
