This Common Core aligned project is appropriate for middle school students in grades 6-8. It takes approximately 3 weeks to complete, and most class time should be devoted to some aspect of the project. The standards are spiraled throughout the project; the goal of the project is to motivate students to master Writing, Speaking/Listening, and Reading Informational Text standards through a project-based learning experience that is driven by student choice and passion.
The unit begins with the question, “what are you willing to stand up for?” With this driving question, students explore social issues and charities they are passionate about. Embedding student choice enhances learning outcomes astronomically.
This highly integrated 3-week project not only invests students, but it also gives them an authentic learning experience that seamlessly covers myriad CCSS standards.
At the end of the project, students turn in/complete:
1. Written Component: Persuasive paper in which they argue why their social issue is the most important in the world & why their charity best solves the social issue.
2. PPT Presentation & In-Class Presentation: Students give a 2-3 minute speech to their class in the UN Summit on Social Issues. Their speech has the same argumentative aim as the paper. Students learn to create and use note cards for a speech & how to successfully integrate visual and multimedia aids into their projects.

HOW IT WORKS:
This is a three-week unit designed for mostly in-class learning. It has been used previously in 7th Grade ELA classrooms and has been revised to be an even better resource in your classroom.
Use the 13-Page Teaching/Implementation Guide to get started. The teaching guide includes a quick reference table with all folders & documents. It also has a daily breakdown of three-week project in easy-to-read bullet points. The documents for each day of the unit are noted in the teaching guide. Key teaching points for each day are explained, lesson time is included, and homework/ action items for students are noted.
All documents in the bundle are included as Word Files that you can edit to meet the needs of your classroom and as PDFs that are ready to print and copy.
