Product Description

With this activity, students will select roll a dice 5 times to create a 3 digit by 2 digit multiplication problem. Students will practice decomposing both factors into friendly numbers that are easier to work with. Students will be asked to model their decomposing with an area model and then add up all the partial products to get a final answer.

This activity can be used as independent work or as partner work. If working with partners, or as a whole group closing, point out how the area model should be divided to show proper proportions. Example: An area of 1,000 should look much larger than an area of 5!

This activity has 2 different options, one where the equations are created by rolling dice, and the other where the equations are already provided. There is also a corresponding homework sheet included.
