In this interactive PPT, students practice changing the 30 most common English verbs to the simple past tense (ex: think to thought, use to used, have to had, play to played). A complete list of included verbs can be seen in the Preview document.
This teacher-led PPT has two main sections. First, students choose a present verb from the list by defining or acting out its meaning. This part could easily be turned into a game! Clicking on the chosen verb takes you to a slide where students are prompted to turn the verb into its simple past form, both on its own and as part of a sentence. They are also shown how to make the verb negative by adding "did not." When you click to go back to the complete list, each verb changes color to show that it has already been used.
In the second section of the PPT, students are shown 6 verbs on the screen with pictures, and they are prompted to write their own sentences using the verbs provided, which they can then share with the class through the last couple slides in the presentation.
This presentation accesses all four essential modalities for ESOL learners (reading, writing, speaking, and listening), and could easily be modified to be more advanced, basic, or paired with different activities & assessments (ex: verb charts, graphic organizers, skits, etc.). Without the writing piece, it would make a great review activity for elementary students as well, not just ESOL learners. Personally, I developed this lesson for an adult ESOL class (they had a blast!)... but it would work well for younger students as well.
