Morgan Spurlock and Rex Walls both hail from West Virginia and both left as soon as possible because they aren't cut out for the hard work that it takes to find success there. When Rex moves back to Welch, he has far and few job options outside of coal mining. In this documentary, Morgan shadows a miner and reveals just how grueling this profession is, and it becomes apparent that Rex is far too lazy and drunk for such a profession. In the memoir Jeannette mentioned how tired, worn down and quick to fight the residents of Welch were because of their jobs in coal mining. This documentary also exposes the negative health impact of mining, such as black lung, which is reflected in the memoir when it prevents Ginnie Sue's husband from providing for his family and leaving it all up to her.
