I love using quotes, and think they are a great opportunity for students to be exposed to a variety of famous people. However, I'm not sure how much they ever really learn about the people.
This year I found a quote that matches the topic of our weekly essential question for our 4th grade Wonders series. Then I created a mini biography quote to make sure that the students are truly being exposed to these figures. There are 30 quotes from speakers such as:
Walt Disney, Dr. Seuss, JFK, Nelson Mandela, Michelle Obama, Gandhi, Mother Theresa, MLK Jr., Maya Angelou, Mark Twain, Abe Lincoln, and many more! There are also a few weeks that have a proverb instead of a quote (which is a CC standard).
My preview shows 8 of the weeks (1 quote and matching bio for each week). Each quote has a new speaker, and new design.
If you use Wonders, the first quote is for the Smart Start portion, and then one a week (except Unit 3 - Week 4, in which the essential question has them thinking about how all the quotes are words that inspire change). These would be in order from the download. AND, IF YOU USE WONDERS, THESE ARE INCLUDED IN MY WEEKLY ELA SHEETS BUNDLE
. You may want to check it out before purchasing this product.
If you don't use Wonders, these are just good general quotes that expose students to famous people and often times well known phrases. If printing is an issue, they can just be displayed, and then used to spark discussion of the meaning of the quotes (speaking and listening standards!).
