This download will be used all year! It is a great value and I truly believe it will expand the vocabulary of all students in your classroom. There is an entire bulletin board set ( 15 categories and over 250 words), 13 picture prompts to apply vocabulary in writing and more than 30 mini lesson ideas of how to build vocabulary in speech and in writing!Which is just in time as there is a huge emphasis for vocabulary development in primary age students in the ELA Common core standards.
The new common core standards ask that students use language to explain their thinking and justify their reasoning. They ask that students see the nuances in the meanings of words and that they are able to identify/ use sensory language. When looking at the standards, there is an emphasis for vocabulary development in 1st grade. Unfortunately, students are coming to school with a smaller vocabulary but expected to use a greater variety of adjectives and sensory language in their speech and writing with the new common core standards. As teachers, we need to ensure our students are exposed to language in order to expand their basic vocabulary before they will be able to use that language in writing. Through explicit vocabulary instruction we can close gaps in our neediest students and expand the vocabulary of our strongest students while building writing skills at the same time.
In this bulletin board set, there are over 30 mini-lesson ideas to use with your students to give them meaningful experiences with vocabulary in order to apply their new learning into writing. The mini lessons use arts integration, literature, writing and even science connections to build vocabulary.
There are also many other options if you choose not to make the bulletin board set. You could put the pages into page protectors and make a portable word wall in a binder. You could also put the words and labels on rings. Just make sure the words are accessible to students and they are encouraged to use them.
Cut apart, the words would also be great for sorts. Use these resources how they work best for you!
