Here is a set of 300 commonly written words formatted in a few different ways to help students meet the Common Core State Standards for Language. Part of the standard is to demonstrate the ability to “use appropriate reference materials to check and correct spelling.” I use these lists of commonly written spelling words in my classroom to help students achieve this goal.
You can print double sided on card stock and give each student one set to take home for practicing and one set to leave in their writing workshop folder. Alternatively you can run off a copy and circle words the student misspells in everyday writing to send home for parents and students to practice together. You may also want to make sets and laminate them so you can use washable markers to allow students to mark off words as they master them (or keep track of problem words).
These word lists are tailored to meet Common Core Standards for 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade, but can also be a helpful addition for high achievers in younger grades or as a great addition to an ESL classroom.
This download includes a set of the first 150 spelling words in alphabetical, and numeric order, and a set of all 300 words in alphabetical, and numeric order.
