Writing is the ultimate extension of learning; it requires students to understand and organize ideas and manipulate language in order to pass that knowledge on to another. Students should be writing four times the amount teachers could possibly grade; daily practice allows ample opportunity for the brain work that precedes the pen and paper session. These warm-up prompts cover a variety of topics, ranging from writing directions, comparing and contrasting, and description, to cross curricular applications in math. They are independent of any lesson and can be used as to open a lesson or fill in down time during class. Most of them are appropriate for 7th grade and up.
