This playful activity is a great way to get your students talking about making mistakes and being patient. :)
My first day with my 5th graders was 2 days ago and this activity was a HIT! Zero kids did it correctly to earn a squishy ball, lol, but they all learned a valuable lesson: pay close attention to the directions. :)
How does it work? Students are asked to read all directions FIRST, then complete the fun, easy activities on the sheet. The final direction says to ONLY do number 7. :) Imagine how quickly the students will realize (and try to erase, lol) the previous answers! Definitely a lesson on learning to follow directions!
I love having the students “hurry” to do this activity. Usually only 1-2 kids per class actually follow the directions and complete this activity correctly. (It’s funny to watch those few kids as they look at you and smile, while all the other students are working at their fastest pace to be “done”.)
Afterwards, I usually have a class discussion about WHY we did this activity.
Working on following directions
Taking our time to do things correctly
It’s interesting to get student feedback. They might say that they really wanted to complete the tasks, therefore, they rushed. It’s very insightful and the kids always remember this playful activity that also teaches them a lesson in patience.
