This using number lines to round to the nearest 10, 100, 1,000 and 10,000 (TEK 3.2C) activity can be used to introduce the TEK as a whole group, as a anchor station or center, or as an intervention tool.
There are two sets for rounding to 10, two sets for rounding to 100, two sets for rounding to 1,000, and two sets for rounding to 10,000 with 16 cars to locate on each one.
Set Up: I print out each roller-coaster cars sheet in color (you can do them on different colored paper), then I will print the smaller roller coaster (three rides to each page) on colored paper to where each kid has one. I also print the smaller roller coaster (three rides to each page) one sheet in color for centers.
Directions For whole Group:
First I project the big roller coaster paper and pass out to each student the smaller roller coaster (3 per page). I then choose a student to pick a roller coaster car and let them put it on the roller coaster projected on the board. The students at their seat also write the number on their little roller coaster. This continues till all the roller coaster cars are located on the number line.
Directions For Small Group: I project the big roller coaster on the board and then give the students the roller coaster cars to match. I let the students use the colored small roller coaster print outs and they locate the cars and then mark it on their own roller coaster.
