This card sort is a way for students to demonstrate their understanding of various exponent property rules and their meaning. The problems include the product property, quotient property, power to power property, combining like terms, and distributing with exponents (product property). The zip file contains docx and pdf files so the teacher can edit the problems to best fit the learning goals of the classroom.
The cards include problems on the left, the expanded form to emphasize the meaning of the rules/shortcuts in the middle, and the simplified form on the right. The cards are labeled with numbers for the problems and capital letters for the expanded and simplified forms. The cards are mixed up on the sheet given so teachers can pass the sheet out and have students cut out the pieces and put them in order on a new paper or they may give the students the half-sheet table that is included and have them fill in the table with which values match.
This card sort/matching activity is a great way to assess student understanding of the various exponent properties before moving on to teach integer and zero exponents.
