This is a hands on one and two step addition and subtraction (STAAR TEK 3.4A) activity that can be used as whole group introduction to the TEK, small group, intervention, centers or anchor stations.
About the Questions:
There are 20 total questions. I have included pictures that go along with 10 of the questions so the students could actually feel what its like to add and subtract in word problems. These 10 questions have 4 one step word problems and 6 two step word problems. I use two question a day for a week as a whole group (Mon – Thur. 1 one step problem and 1 two step problem, and Fri. 2 two step problems). Every day I also give the two similar questions with BIG (third grade) numbers. You can do these together or as a whole. This helps the students see that what you did with the small number is the same thing you do with the big numbers.
About the Materials:
I always laminate the items the students use to act out the word problems for durability. You will notice that I have included more pictures then the word problems require. I do this so the students will actually have to work the problem to figure out how much of everything they need. For my classroom I printed a class set (a set of 5, because I have 5 tables) of the pictures for the word problems. This way every student gets to feel the addition and subtraction themselves. I also have my students practice drawing a picture because the will not have these cut outs on STAAR day. On the questions without cut outs I have the students use base ten blocks to help them solve it and make them draw the base ten blocks as their picture. It is a lot of work cutting and laminating the pictures but, this has really helped my students master muti-step addition and subtraction word problems. On our district benchmarks these TEK were actually my highest. I’m excited to say we had 100% pass STAAR and again this was one of my higher TEKS.
