This is a hands on one and two step multiplication and division (STAAR TEK 3.4K) activity that can be used as whole group introduction to the TEK, small group, intervention, centers or anchor stations.
About the Questions:
There are 10 total questions. I have included pictures that go along with each question so the students could actually feel what its like to multiply and divide in word problem. I use one question a day for a week as a whole group. The next week I gave the students the similar questions to worth either by themselves or with their table. The questions have two that are very similar so the students can feel some success with this extremely difficult TEK.
About the Materials:
I always laminate the items the students use to act out the word problems for durability. You will notice that I have included more pictures then the word problems require. I do this so the students will actually have to work the problem to figure out how much of everything they need. For my classroom I printed a class set (a set of 5, because I have 5 tables) of the pictures for the word problems we were doing as a whole group. This way every student gets to feel the multiplication and division themselves. For the questions that were similar to these, I just printed out one set of pictures for each question. Then passed one out to each of my 5 tables. This was they were working on different ones, couldn’t copy, and I didn’t have to cut out so many things. I also have my students practice drawing a picture because the will not have these cut outs on STAAR day. It is a lot of work cutting and laminating the pictures but, this has really helped my students master muti-step multiplication and division word problems. On our district benchmarks these teks were actually my highest. I’m excited to see how they did on STAAR.
