3D Mother’s Day Puzzle 1 by MathArt
This multi-step project is a great review of perimeter and area with 10 composite figures. Students use 2D shapes to create a 3D artwork. There is a detailed step by step version of the project that includes drawing a reflection of each figure. There is also a shortened version that can be used as a teacher led whole class review. Once students see you assemble your sample 3 dimensional abstract geometric sculpture puzzle, they will be enthusiastic to construct their own. This project is full of rigor and will challenge your students and their critical thinking skills right up to the end.
This lesson can be whole group, a work station, Math Journal pages or the reward for successfully completing an assignment with time to spare! As you work through the calculations on the first figure, students will see how important it is to follow each step of the instructions on the calculation sheet. Once they catch on, they can work independently or in pairs. Students should stop at step 5 and go to the next figure if you want them to do all their calculations before construction begins.
• record the length of each side on the figure
• complete the number sentence and solve for perimeter
• complete the number sentences to solve for area of each of 3 rectangular arrays within the composite figure
• complete the number sentence to solve for total area of the composite figure
• draw figure’s reflection
The calculations include fill in the blank number sentences that guide students through each step. Each composite figure is composed of 3 labeled rectangular arrays to aid them in their calculations. Each figure is drawn in centimeters. Overall size of the constructed sculpture is approx. 10 cm. x 10 cm. x 20 cm. The figures have 1 cm. long thick dashed lines that the students will cut. These will allow the pieces to slide together 2 cm. and lock the pieces in place. Construction materials and tools are copy paper, glue, scissors, and crayons.
Vocabulary you will use in this lesson: composite figure, 2 dimensional, 3 dimensional, perimeter, area, add, multiply, rectangular array, parallel, perpendicular, length, width, horizontal, vertical, centimeters, square centimeters, rotate, reflection, Line of Symmetry.
This product is complete with
