This unit begins with an introductory lesson on a simple key chain project. It is written step-by-step for the beginner, and includes a link to a video tutorial that I use in class for absent students. The tutorial will walk you through the project, and by the end you will be able to successfully design a basic key chain or similar product with no previous experience needed. The remainder of the unit does not include a full write up of the lessons, but rather a synopsis of the ideas that might be used to further learning. The key chain project would take a typical 4th or 5th grade student three sessions of 45 minutes or less to complete, assuming no prior experience. The project allows for multiple products to be designed to meet the constraints to allow for more advanced users that may be in the class. This project is used to teach the engineering design process and is tied to the Michigan Technology Standards and NGSS.
