A great book to use with this activity is "Captain Invincible and the Space Shapes" by Stuart Murphy. After discussing 3D shapes, give students a box of mixed recyclables such as paper towel rolls, cube sized boxes, snow cone cups, cylinder shaped bottles, etc. and let them design 3D space ships! Have the duct tape ready for assembling. Or let students use blocks to design their space ships if recyclable material is not available. Once students have assembled their space ships, they can use the sheet to draw what their space ship looks like and then tell how many of each shape they used in their design. Use the exit ticket to assess for identification of shape.
