3D Valentine’s Rectangular Array Puzzle 1 by MathArt
Yes, a rectangular array is 2 dimensional, but each array in this lesson will become part of a 3 dimensional abstract geometric Valentine’s Day Card sculpture that your students will construct. This project is full of rigor and will challenge your students and their critical thinking skills right up to the end.
This is a great review of multiplication, repeated addition, perimeter, and area. This lesson can be whole group, a work station, Math Journal pages or the reward for successfully completing an assignment with time to spare! Students will listen to instruction on the first figures as you inform them how important it is to follow each step of the instructions on the calculation sheet. Once they catch on, they can work independently or in pairs. Students should stop at step 8 and go to the next figure if you want them to do all their calculations before construction begins.

Each side of the construction has a different saying written in a different text style which will aid students in their puzzle construction. Sayings are: I Love You, U R Special, Be My Valentine, and Be Mine! Students can add additional text if they wish before they color their arrays so each will be unique and personal.
Each rectangular array is drawn to scale in centimeters. Overall size of the constructed sculpture is 9 cm. x 9 cm. x 18 cm. The arrays have 1 cm. long lines that the students will cut. These will allow the pieces to slide together 2 cm. and lock the pieces in place. Construction materials and tools are copy paper, crayons, glue, and scissors.
