This product includes everything you need to create an easy and interactive activity with your students when learning how to construct pictographs.
Students will "order" their problem off of the "Pictograph Menu".
Included are pages for students to receive upon their order. You can choose to hand the students the entire page and have the students cut out their pieces OR you can choose to cut out the pieces and place them in envelopes for the students. Regardless of what item on the "Pictograph Menu" struck your students' interest, the numbers that the students are working with will remain the same as well as the number of pieces they are offered.
The students will then receive a problem related to the item in which they ordered which also includes a data chart. Students will use this chart, their pieces, and a blank key to create a pictograph to display their data. Students will have to work and think creatively to determine how to represent their data only with the number of pieces that they have to work with. Therefore, students will have to determine how much each piece will be worth (hence, the key!). This allows for the students to think critically and creatively.
You may decide for students to work in small groups, partners, or individually.
As an extension, after creating their graph, students can create a list of questions to ask their peers about their graph!
I have used this activity twice in the classroom and it is a HIT! The students love that they control what they choose to do and how they go about displaying the data.
No answer key is included with this product as your answers may vary based on the students' thinking! However, most students will come to find that the most logical way to represent the data in each graph is to use one picture to represent 2 items.
