3Minute Math Dash is a computation program designed to help students develop their number fluency. By targeting a specific operation or skill over a 10-day span, students improve their computation speed while committing basic facts and algorithms to memory. Thus, the rigor of higher level, Common Core math tasks won’t get bogged down in basic computation. The 3Minute Math Dash program also allows students to set goals, track progress, and compete against classmates.
Tips & Tricks
At the beginning of the semester, each student should be provided a 3Minute Math Dash Tracking Sheet (located in my store). This tracking sheet allows each student to track up to six skills throughout the semester. Students can paste or 3-hole punch their tracking sheets into their notebook for access every day for easy access (or the teacher can house them in an easy to access location).
The educator then decides which skill(s) needs to be targeted. Our program features skills used in elementary, middle, and high school. They range from basic addition facts to simplifying complex exponential expressions!
Each skill consists of 10 randomly generated “days to dash”. Students complete 1 dash each day over the span of 10 school days, in a time span of 3 minutes. Once the 3 minutes are up, students can trade and grade (or grade their own if you prefer) while the teacher reads the answers aloud. Once finished, students track their percent correct on their tracking sheet (tabular and graphical). During my career we’ve counted day 10 as the “live dash”. This day counts as a formative assessment grade, and can be viewed as a raw score or an improvement score.
What’s Included Here?
In this 3Minute Math Dash, students will divide integers from -12 to 12. Each dash contains 100 problems and each page in the document contains two dashes (to save copies).
