I created this ‘recording sheet’ for students who have been taught the doubling strategies for solving multiplication problems with factors of 2, 4 and 8. This type of practice forces students to think about the doubling strategies while solving problems and it adds the extension element of recording your thinking. This is a great way to get kids thinking and processing their work but also this recording sheet is wonderful tool for teachers because it’s clear who understands the doubling strategies and who needs further assistance/intervention. This process of doubling should be extended into fluent, mental and oral computation. Students should be able to mentally double, double-double, and double-double-double accurately and fluently by the end of 3rd grade. This recording sheet is a wonderful, helpful tool to get them there.
