In honor of Patriot Day, this project was created to help students understand the events surrounding 9/11. Using the STEM design process, students are asked to design and create a 9/11 memorial that will be displayed in Washington DC. Embedded in this process are specific requirements that the students must incorporate in their design.
For Third Grade SS Standards:
Historical thinking begins with a clear sense of time.
1. Students learn about community events in past and present history from near and far.
2. Students evaluate photos and artifacts and how those things have changed over time.
In addition, Writing and Speaking and Listening standards are met as well!
Support this instruction by watching a short video clip and by reading the book, The Man Who Walked Between The Towers by Mordicao Gerstein.
In addition, challenge your students to create 3-D models of their projects using recyclable materials, too!
I hope you enjoy this lesson with your students!
Please remember this creation was made for the purpose of classroom use only.
