The ACT Aspire is shaping the way students are now expected to test. The ACT Aspire assesses students on multiple levels, preparing them for college and career. The rigorous questioning begins at the 3rd grade level. I struggled finding resources to prepare my students for such a challenging task .. which led to the creation of my own, well thought out, planned prep program!
This NO PREP 18 week bundle provides meaningful assessment for students, imitating the questions on the ACT Aspire English exam. Students must think deeply and process information before jumping to an answer. The Common Core Language standards are spread out among the 18 weeks. Each skill is addressed in different ways.
The above standards have a HEAVY emphasis on grammar. This resource consists of a daily language question (Monday - Thursday). The language skills covered in this bundle include but are not limited to:
-Commas (in a list, addresses, dialogue)
-Parts of speech (comparative/superlative adjectives, abstract nouns, plural/possessive nouns, irregular verbs)
-Spelling of high frequency words
Each Friday, students will read and study the structure of a short paragraph. The texts are both fiction and non-fiction. Students are asked to respond to questions pertaining to:
-Removal/addition of sentences
ALL questions throughout the week are multiple choice. The topics and vocabulary are grade/age appropriate and change to maintain student interest.
Use this resource to drive instruction for the week or to create teachable moments during review sessions. Whatever the case, students will thrive as they become better editors, revisers, readers, and writers!
Students can complete the daily activities independently or with a partner. Check out my Partner Question Cards: Accountable Classroom Chit Chat
activity. This promotes questioning and evidence based responses among partner pairs.
This unit is centered around 3rd grade standards but can also be used in a 4th grade classroom. Good luck!! :)
