Description

This resource reviews the critical 3rd grade math skills of multiplication, division, area, and perimeter as your students work through a fun activity planning, harvesting and selling the vegetables in their custom garden. This project would be appropriate for any students needing a review of multiplication and division with products to 100, along with area and perimeter of rectangles. This resource is ideal for distance learning.

Your students will find the most success as each step of the activity is briefly modeled and then students are allowed to work independently to make their own choices about their garden. The practice of multiplication, division, area, and perimeter are made fun as your students work to create a garden.

You can differentiate the activity and add a challenge by asking students to meet specific criteria. Can you make a very small garden? What about a very large garden? Who can create a garden that earns the most money at the farmer's market?

Included in the activity you will find:

⭐ Step 1: Choosing Plants- Students will choose their plants from a catalog and will determine the number of each plant they choose to plant. Students will also calculate the cost of their plants.

⭐ Step 2: Planning Garden Plots- Students will create rectangular area models to accommodate each of the 5 plants they selected.

⭐ Step 3: Protect The Plants- Students will determine the perimeter of each of their 5 garden plots so that they are able to protect their plants with a fence.

⭐ Step 4: Harvest- Students will harvest their vegetables and divide them into baskets to prepare for the farmer's market.

⭐ Step 5: To the Market- Students will sell their baskets of vegetables and calculate the amount of money they will earn from their garden.

This activity can be completed entirely online, however, a 1-page recording form has been included for ease of grading should you need that option.
