Daily Language Checks
Daily Language Checks are a great way to have students practice important English Language Arts skills that are tested in the Spring. Each page consists of a fun, engaging story (fiction, non-fiction, poetry, diagrams, etc.) followed by one question for each tested cluster (Vocabulary Development, Reading Comprehension, Literary Response and Analysis, Writing Strategies, and Language Conventions).
While Daily Language Checks are designed around the third grade skills tested on the CST, they are also a great preview for advanced second graders and review for fourth graders.
CST Standards Matrix
Each question is correlated to one of the standards used on the CST (California State Testing.
How to Use Daily Language Checks
Daily Language Checks can be
photocopied into individual packets for the students
completed together as a whole class
sent home as homework
assigned as independent seat work
Daily Language Checks only need about five minutes to complete. They can be used during an assigned instructional period or used whenever there is a few minutes of free time. With daily practice, the students will develop confidence and skill in answering questions about what they have read. With time and practice, these important skills will transfer to other materials read in the classroom.
