Product Description

In this Division Math Mystery Activity – Case of The Divided Dragons (GRADE 3) – students will be practicing and reviewing division skills to solve which dragon is responsible for the breaking up of the Dragon Alliance! NO PREP! Just print and go! This fun and engaging math activity will motivate your students during math class.

An optional video hook is provided to set the stage to engage when introducing the case file. CHECK OUT THE FUN HOOK VIDEO FOR DIVIDED DRAGONS

(Please note that the written story in the Math Mystery product has some slight variations to the video - this could be further used as a compare and contrast activity in a literacy session.)

NEW - Editable Suspect list added to the packet. This way you can change the dragon names and alter the mystery outcome. There are also two alternative pre-made lists you can use instead. This is a great option if your students have already done this mystery story before and you need to change the mystery answer.

There are 5 clues to crack to solve the mystery:

Clue 1: Division (With Visual Models provided)

Clue 2: Dividing by 2s, 3s, 4s and 5s

Clue 3: Dividing by 6s, 7s, 8s and 9s

Clue 4: Division Word Problems (Facts: 1-12 + bonus challenge question at the end)

Clue 5: Dividing by 10s, 11s and 12s

Pack also includes a mystery declaration sheet, answer sheets, elimination guide and awards.

Great for review at the end of the unit OR pace this case clue by clue as students learn the skills. (Hold the suspect list until the end if you choose to do this in a different order to the numbered clues sequenced.) These are also handy activities to have for the sub-tub, enrichment, tutoring, and/or early-finishers.

How long will this activity take?

Time to complete will vary anywhere between 30mins - 2 hours or more! It mainly depends on how familiar your students are with the math mystery format, as well as how difficult they find math skills covered in the particular mystery. Please check the math skills outlined in the clues above to help determine suitability for your class. I highly recommend pacing this activity by giving students one clue at a time. Once the whole class has completed a clue, then move on to the next clue either within the same lesson or the next math session. New math content presented? Make a lesson out of it by modeling the math before diving into the clue. I like to say, "we must learn something new before attempting the next clue." There are lots of ways to implement this activity in your classroom, learn more in the blog post link below:
