I love incorporating art history in my art lessons. After a trip to Europe I was inspired to create a European based unit in my classes 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th. This lesson was specifically designed for 3rd grade, although it could be taught to 2nd, 4th, or 5th.
For third grade I decided to introduce them to mosaics, specifically in St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City. In the lesson we discuss how art can tell stories through single images, and how they can also tell a story through a single image.
This lesson pack includes the big idea, essential questions, goals, objectives, national standards, vocabulary, supply list, step by step instructions to implement the assignment, grading checklist, project examples, extension ideas, and three PowerPoints.
