Description

Geometry Math Mystery Activity: Case of The Giant Goblin. NO PREP, just print and go Students must use their geometry math skills, to eliminate locations & possibilities, so they can find out where the Shrinkinator is to make the Giant Goblin the right size again!

Easy prep! Just Print & Solve! OR NEW Google Docs option to save paper!

NEW - Distance Learning Update: I've added a Word Document within the folder that contains a Google Doc link to share this resource with your students via Google Classroom or Drive. Parts of the pages are editable so that your students can complete without having to print the pages. Please note, you will need to make a copy of the Google Slides to your drive before you can edit.

Optional VIDEO HOOK included. This can be viewed in the preview thumbnail section above or CLICK HERE to VIEW Video Hook

A written story is also included in the PDF file.

NEW - Editable list added to the packet. This way you can change the location names and alter the mystery outcome. There are also two alternative pre-made lists you can use instead. This is a great option if your students have already done this mystery story before and you need to change the mystery answer.

There are 5 clues to crack to solve the mystery:

- Clue 1: Identifying 2D & 3D Shapes

- Clue 2: Perimeter

- Clue 3: Area (Using Unit Squares)

- Clue 4: Area of Rectangles (L x W)

- Clue 5: Perimeter - Find The Missing Length

(Customary and Metric options provided)

Pack also includes a suspect declaration sheet, answer sheets, elimination guide and awards.

How long will this activity take?

Time to complete will vary anywhere between 30mins - 2 hours or more! It mainly depends on how familiar your students are with the math mystery format, as well as how difficult they find math skills covered in the particular mystery. Please check the math skills outlined in the clues above to help determine suitability for your class. I highly recommend pacing this activity by giving students one clue at a time. Once the whole class has completed a clue, then move on to the next clue either within the same lesson or the next math session. New math content presented? Make a lesson out of it by modeling the math before diving into the clue. I like to say, "we must learn something new before attempting the next clue." There are lots of ways to implement this activity in your classroom, learn more in the blog post link below: Read Blog Post: Five Easy Ways to use Math Mysteries in your Classroom.

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and others) may share attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the shared attributes can define a larger category (e.g., quadrilaterals). Recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories.
Solve real world and mathematical problems involving perimeters of polygons, including finding the perimeter given the side lengths, finding an unknown side length, and exhibiting rectangles with the same perimeter and different areas or with the same area and different perimeters.
Find the area of a rectangle with whole-number side lengths by tiling it, and show that the area is the same as would be found by multiplying the side lengths.
Measure areas by counting unit squares (square cm, square m, square in, square ft, and improvised units).
