This is a unit plan that I made for a 3rd grade class in my literacy class last semester. It has ten days of whole group instruction for reading, writing, guided reading (differentiated by group levels), and ten workstations that correlate with the reading, and writing instruction. It also includes one completed lesson plan from one of the days of instruction.
This unit plan teaches the following West Virginia CSO's: : 1) Use pre-reading strategies to comprehend text (e.g., activating prior knowledge, predictions, and questioning). 2) Apply and generate tiered levels of vocabulary in speaking and reading experiences. 3) Read fluently with appropriate rate, accuracy, and prosody. 4) Compare, and contrast self to text in making connections to characters or simple events in a literary work to own life and other cultures (e.g. events, characters, conflicts, themes). 5) Use strategies to gather and record information for research topics: note taking, summarizing, paraphrasing, describing in narrative form, gathering information from direct quotes, maps, charts, graphs, and tables. 6) Select and using a variety of sources to gather information (e.g., dictionaries, encyclopedias, newspapers, informational texts, and electronic resources). 7) Distinguish a variety of messages conveyed through visual media (e.g., Internet, database, email, electronic resources, and online research).
This is a wonderful unit plan that took me days to complete. It is a wonderful resource that can be used in your classroom.
