Since problem based learning is an essential part of teaching the Common Core, why not start your students' day with a real life problem to solve? Morning Math consists of a problem for each day of the school year that requires students to think critically, applying mathematical skills learned throughout the school year.
A poster is included, which reminds students to THINK about effective problem solving strategies, SHOW their answers, AND SOLVE the problem:
THINK: What am I to figure out in this problem? How can I use the information I'm given to solve the problem? How many steps will it take before I get to the answer? What strategy can I use to solve the problem?
SHOW: Write my thinking and strategies for solving the problem in the white space.
SOLVE: Once I've shown my work, write the answer(s).
Morning Math may be used as a starter for students arriving to class, as an independent assignment after work is complete, as a problem solving center activity, or for a whole class activity. All sets include problems that require application of skills with mixed operations, multi-step problem solving, and critical thinking. Math topics include: Addition and Subtraction with greater numbers, Multiplication, Division, Measurement, Data, Geometry, and Fractions.
