This packet is made to accompany the book, Number Talks, Helping Children Build Mental Math and Computation Strategies, by Sherry Parrish from Math Solutions. If you do not use the book to guide you but use something else, see below the strategies that are assessed.
I have made exit ticket assessments that can give you a quick glance at who has mastered the strategies and who has not. Each of the strategies has 3 equation strings. The first string, requires the students to solve it two different ways. The second string requires the students to provide a written explanation. The third string shows a completed solution path. The students must agree or disagree and defend their answer.
The Strategies are:
Addition: making 10s, Making Friendly Numbers, Doubles/Near Doubles, Break Apart into Place Value, Adding up in Chunks
Subtraction: Adding Up, Removal by Break Apart, Create an Easier Problem, Keeping a Constant Difference
Multiplication: Making Friendly Numbers
As you know, the strategies are broken down by grade level. K, 1, and 2, all have their own separate section. Grades 3-5 are chunked together. For organization purposes, I included all of the addition strategies, all of the subtraction strategies (except the negative numbers), and the first multiplication.
The rest of the strategies are included in the grades 4-5 assessment pack. It can also be purchased in the bundle at a reduced price.
Ways to Use the Assessments
Give one section a day.
Do the entire page.
Use the first one as guided practice, and then individually.
Do it in pairs
Give multiple times to check for improvement and understanding.
Using the rubric, score the assessment and create guided math groups.
