How do students get better at reading? Research shows they have to read, read, read! It can be difficult to find passages that both interest the students and align closely with the language they will see on standardized tests. I created these to meet that need.
I have often used these for morning work, remediation, and homework. Included are one fiction and one nonfiction passage for each sport (for a total of 18 passages). Also included are fluency practice as well as comprehension questions. The questions are based on Virginia third grade reading and language arts standards. The question stems reflect what students will see on the SOL test, but if you are outside of Virginia it is still excellent reading comprehension practice. There is also a "low ink" version of the passages that omit the scalloped boarder.
Reading topics covered:
*ABC Order/Guide Words
*Characters (traits, compare/contrast)
*Don't forget to leave feedback for TPT credits!
