This is it!!! Your entire 3rd grade year of science. By teaching these 6 units and 2 science reading activities, you will be covering all of the 3rd grade content standards of the Next Generation Science Standards, as well as the engineering standards for grades 3-5. Each unit is packed full of inquiry based activities, integrated language arts, word wall cards, games, task cards, projects, and assessments. Here's a brief description of each unit. Here's what's included:
Unit 1: Animal Adaptations
Activity 1: What Butterfly? Students examine environments and then create an insect that can camouflage well in the chosen environment. Class data is collected and analyzed.
Activity 2: Classifying Camouflage: This inquiry-based activity allows students to classify pictures and descriptions of animals based on the type of camouflage they use.
Activity 3: Butterfly Islands: In this activity students will simulate being birds and eating butterflies from different colored islands. Extensions to the idea of natural selection are made. Opportunities for data collection and analysis are included.
Activity 4: My Beak is Better Than Yours!: Students will test different “beaks” and their suitability for different food.
Unit 2: Magnetism
Activity 1: Attraction Action: Students hypothesize then test a variety of objects to determine which ones are magnetic.
Activity 2: Give Me Strength!: Students will test different magnets to see which ones are stronger. They will also make some conclusions as to where the magnets are strongest.
Activity 3: North vs. South: Students will investigate the poles of bar magnets. They will also use iron filings to discover the magnetic field of a bar magnet.
Activity 4: Electromagnet: Students will make their own electromagnet. They will then make improvements by increasing the coils or adding more batteries.
Activity 5: Magnetism Bingo: To practice vocabulary and concepts students play Magnetism Bingo.
Activity 6: Post Test and grading rubric
Unit 3: Heredity and Traits
Part 1: Data Collection: Students will collect real data from parents of common inherited traits.
Part 2: A Chip off the Old Block: Students will make models of their parents genes for 4 common traits. They will build models of their own genes for the same traits.
Part 3: Post-It Party: Class data will be collected and analyzed for the 4 traits. Students will develop a conceptual understanding of how traits are passed on from parents to offspring.
Part 4: Vocabulary Development: Students will put vocabulary words to the concepts learned in the previous activity. Punnett Square practice is also included.
Part 5: Inherited vs. Acquired Trait Sort: Students think about the traits they have, both inherited and learned and sort them.
Part 6: Heredity Bingo: To practice vocabulary and concepts students play Heredity Bingo.
Part 7: An optional post test is included.
Unit 4: Forces and Motion
Activity 1: Marble Curling: Students investigate Newton’s first law of motion with this fun cooperative game. Game board templates included.
Activity 2: Cars and Ramps: To investigate Newton’s second law of motion, students explore how mass impacts the distance cars travel down a ramp.
Activity 3: Balloon Rockets: Students investigate Newton’s third law of motion by launching balloon rockets.
Activity 4: Strawkets: Students apply their knowledge of Newton’s Laws of Motion to engineer strawkets.
Mini Posters of each of Newton’s Laws of Motion are included in kid lingo.
A matching activity to held students identify the different laws of motion culminates this mini unit
Unit 5: Weather
Activity 1: Making a Class Weather Station: Students make their own weather station then use it to keep a weather log.
Activity 2: Clouds: Students learn about the different types of clouds and how they are used to make weather predictions. They then use cotton balls to create the different types.
Activity 3: Making Frost: Students investigate how frost is made with this hands-on activity.
Activity 4: Tornado In a Bottle: After discussion extreme weather, students make a tornado in a bottle and examine how objects are moved.
Activity 5: It’s so Humid! Students use a sponge and water to investigate humidity and saturation.
Activity 6: Weather Bingo: Students wrap up the unit by playing Weather Bingo. This serves as a great review of vocabulary. A supplemental thermometer reading practice is also included.
An optional post test and grading rubric are also included.
Unit 6: Introduction to Engineering
In addition to the activities, a powerpoint is also included with this unit.
Activity 1: Float Your Boat: Students go through the engineering design process to create a boat. Once the boat successfully floats, they place marbles in it to see how many it can hold.
Activity 2: Build A Bridge: Students go through the engineering design process to build a bridge. After the bridge is built, they test it to see how many pennies it can hold.
Activity 3: Keep it Cold: This engaging activity challenges students to create a container to keep an ice cube frozen for as long as possible. This could easily be turned into a classroom contest.
Activity 4: Engineering Design Process Flow Chart: Students can use this sheet to review the steps they went through in the completed engineering design assignments. This could potentially be used as an assessment.
Science Informational Readings:
A few of the NGSS 3rd grade standards didn't seem to fit with any unit, so I have created some informational reading lessons to address those.
One is about the impact forest fires
have on living things, and the other is about the importance of honey bees
in the reproduction of some plants. Each of these readings comes with a pre-reading activity, the 2 page article, a question page that can be used as an assessment, as well as an answer key.
This bundle was created for the 3rd grade NGSS standards, but all of these units are suitable for grades 3-6.
