This exercise is designed to be timed for a total of 5 minutes. There are high levels of numeracy tied to skip counting (multiples) and these number all represent the basic multiplication math facts. Multiplication may be taught to students beginning in 2nd grade using the basis of repeated addition; hence, students learn their multiplication math facts with a physical understanding of what they are memorizing. We have this exercise scaled down for 2nd graders, but we use the attached sheet globally in our intermediate grades with high degrees of success. Finally, one of the first strategies students will use to solve a word problem is often by writing out the multiples of the given numbers when appropriate.
