Success in math is more likely if a student is able to understand math vocabulary. While teachers recognize the value of students comprehending math terms, it is sometimes hard for them to incorporate instruction into math class. The series 3rd to 5th Grade Mathematics Vocabulary includes some ideas for doing just that! The series explores the range of math vocabulary found in the common core curriculum of third, fourth, and fifth grade math classes.
PLEASE NOTE: The series is a revision of Mathematics Vocabulary Activities pack produced by Green Ink in 2014.
This pack is the third in the series:
• Subtechnical Words: Notes and Activity Ideas for Teachers
Subtechnical words have one or more meanings in general
vocabulary but also specific mathematical meanings.
The pack includes a math vocabulary graphic organizer for words with multiple meanings, and Trio, an activity that helps students learn about words that crop up in math and everyday language.
Other packs in the series:
• Sample Activities (free download)
In Sym, students discover synonyms for math words.
Ask and Ask Again! helps students to expand their repertoire for describing math operations.
• Technical Words: Notes and Activity Ideas for Teachers
This pack focuses on words–many derived from Latin or Greek– that have precise mathematics meanings and must be explained clearly to students. The pack includes information on morphology of math words along with teacher notes and student worksheets.
• General Words: An Activity Idea for Teachers
General words are neither technical nor subtechnical words but make up most of the words used in math textbooks. In Copy That! students use manipulatives to design structures and communicate their ideas using specific vocabulary.
