These four disks and one DVD cover many genres of Chinese music. It makes great background music when students are working on projects or music to introduce new activities.
1. China (Music: Rough Guide) Ancient Traditions to Beijing punk
This is great list of songs that show students how diverse Chinese music is. It is over an hour of a wide range of modern and folk music.
2. Hugo Production: Flying Dragon and Jumping Tiger
This is an orchestral piece, and highlights my students' understanding of Chinese music.
3. Twelve Girls Band (CD and DVD)
This cd was a great hit in my classroom. A few of the students knew of this group, so it was easy to introduce. Because the group does a mixture of eastern and western music, it was an easy sell to 8th graders. We had several discussions about the instruments used to make the songs. This set really leads to great conversation, and I believe enhanced some of the students' future projects.
4. The Hugo Masters - An Anthology of Chinese Classical Music: VOLUME 4 PERCUSSION
Drums - Nothing better to middle school ears! The editors say, "The music itself is highly varied and richly emotional. The music paints pictures of China's people, their culture and homeland, and their dreams and their despair."
This cd is in a generic jewel case and the liner notes are missing.
