4 Color Word Games
Cover Me!
Don’t Bump Me!
Where’s Green?
Roll, Read, & Color

These are great games to teach color word recognition.
Cover Me!
Give each child a Cover Me board. Copy the color word cards 3 times. The children will take turns drawing a card. They will read the word and cover the crayon with a marker. I use stackers or unifix cubes. The 1st child to cover their crayons wins.

Don’t Bump Me!
You need 1 ‘Don’t Bump Me!’ board. Copy the color word cards 3 times. Each child will be assigned a certain color marker. I use stackers or unifix cubes. The children will take turns drawing a card. They will read the word and cover the crayon of that color with one of their markers. If the crayon is already covered, they can bump that marker off. If their own marker is on that crayon, they may add another one on top to secure it. No one may bump it off now. If the crayon color they draw is already secured, they do nothing. When all the crayons are covered and secured, the child with the most markers on the board wins. Or, you can call time and the child with the most markers on the board wins.

Where’s Green?
Place the crayon pack color word cards in a pocket chart. Hide the green crayon behind one of the crayon packs. The children will guess where they think the green crayon is by reading the color word on the pack of crayons. Lift the crayon pack to see if the crayon is there. Continue until the crayon is found. I included a purple crayon to hide 2 crayons at a time and double the fun!

Roll, Read, & Color
This game can be played either with a small group or independently.
Group: Copy one game board on copy paper. Each child picks 1 color to use. The children take turns rolling the number dice. If they roll a 4, they look in the 4 column and read one of the words that is not already colored. They then color that word if they were able to read it with their assigned color, not the color the word says. If there is not a word left in that column, they miss a turn. When all the words are colored, the child with the most color words colored wins.
You can give each child their own board. They will roll, read, and color with the color read. The child that colors their board first wins or the one with the most colored when you call time wins.
Individual: The children will roll, read, and color until their board is covered. I give my children a board with the color word and the color beside it to use if they need it for reference. You could use this also for assessment without using a reference sheet.
