Product Description
Create a space for students’ burgeoning critical thinking skills with student-led guided discussions... a safe and low-stakes environment to capture students’ attention and promote higher-order thinking.

Includes 4 guides, each 1 page, and each constructed around literary elements of fiction, as follows:
In Discussion 1: Elements of Fiction, overview

In Discussion 2: Plot

In Discussion 3: Setting & Mood
In Discussion 4: Character & Characterization

Each guide is made up of 4 clusters of questions & prompts that promote analytic, synthetic, and evaluative thinking skills. Prompts also include relevant connections to high-interest topics such as taboo social customs, music, and lotteries. I’ve also included topic areas traditionally outside of discussions, topics such as punctuation and parts of speech, to promote new perspectives and fresh ideas.

50 Questions & Prompts
Each guide has between 10 and 15 questions & prompts for a total of 50 questions & prompts across all 4 guides. Each discussion is set for a minimum of 20 minutes, although that timing, as always, really depends on each class.

Grading’s a Breeze...

with a 1-page, super-straightforward holistic rubric to record & track student engagement for all 4 discussions.

Works for Different-Sized Groups

Since each guide includes 4 clusters of questions & prompts, discussion groups are ideally suited to 4 or 8 students, although adapting group sizes would be no problem since there are lots of questions to go around. Would work great with pairs, too.

Works for ANY short story or novel, so can be used over & over again through the year.

In all:
• 4 one-page discussion guides: 10 to 15 prompts & questions per guide (50 in total)
• 1-page rubric
(5 pages, 1 pdf file)
