About SNAPs Lab Stations Activities
SNAPs Lab Stations Activities require students to use science, math, literacy, problem-solving and engineering skills. They are designed to enhance students' understanding of scientific concepts and help students apply scientific ideas to the real world. Each station activity promotes skills so to develop students into proficient and competent scientific thinkers.

SNAPs lab activities have five components:
Science Skills Station to develop science skill proficiency
Narrative Station to build science literacy
Assessment Station to evaluate learning and understanding
Problem-Solving Station to foster engineering design
Synthesis/Summary Project to inspire higher-order learning

A description of the activities at each station in this particular lab is detailed below.

Next Generation Science Standards
This laboratory satisfies NGSS 4-ESS2-1. It combines the three dimensions of science learning - science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas and crosscutting concepts - in order to meet the standard. This laboratory also makes interdisciplinary connections to STEM, Math CCSS and ELA CCSS to build the appropriate skills.

Rate of Erosion Lab Stations Activity Learning Objectives
1. Discuss how water and wind are important to erosion.
2. Support a claim that gravity is the driving force of erosion.
3. Demonstrate how wind, moving water and topography impact the rate of erosion.
4. Utilize the engineering design process to design, build and test a solution that prevents beach erosion.

Science Skills Station
Students will conduct an investigation to determine how the rate of water flow, the slope of land (topography) vegetation impacts the rate of erosion. Students will perform the investigation using “soil” made of small and medium-sized sediment.

Narrative Station
Students will read about the forces that cause erosion and the role of gravity in erosion. Students will also read about the factors that impact the rate of erosion.

Assessment Station
At this station, students will answer questions about key terms and ideas relating to erosion. Students will have to employ lower, mid and higher order thinking skills to answer these questions.

Problem-Solving Station
Students will develop a solution that prevents beach erosion. Students will design and build a prototype of their solution. Then they will test and evaluate their solution.

Synthesis/Summary Project
Students will have a choice of 11 projects. Refer to the SNAPs Lab Stations Best Practices and Setup Guide for directions and suggestions on how to conduct the project.

Additional Materials Required:
1 Computer or tablet
1 Large aluminum tin w/ plastic cover
1 Cookie sheet
1 Watering can
2 cups gravel
1 cup pebbles (< 1 inch diameter)
10-15 rocks (~ 2 inch diameter)
3-4 books
1 Small nail
Paper towels for cleaning up
100 mL Graduated cylinder
Molding clay (Broken into 20 3-inch rectangular prisms)
Medium-sized aluminum tin (1 per group)
Sand (approximately 1 lb per group)
Materials: Straws, Play-doh or clay, rocks, pipe cleaner, cardboard, plastic beads

Note: This lab will take 2 class periods (approximately 2 hours) to complete.
