About SNAPs Lab Stations Activities
SNAPs Lab Stations Activities require students to use science, math, literacy, problem-solving and engineering skills. They are designed to enhance students' understanding of scientific concepts and help students apply scientific ideas to the real world. Each station activity promotes skills so to develop students into proficient and competent scientific thinkers.

SNAPs lab activities have five components:
Science Skills Station to develop science skill proficiency
Narrative Station to build science literacy
Assessment Station to evaluate learning and understanding
Problem-Solving Station to foster engineering design
Synthesis/Summary Project to inspire higher-order learning

A description of the activities at each station in this particular lab is detailed below.

Next Generation Science Standards
This laboratory partially satisfies NGSS 4-LS1-2. It combines the three dimensions of science learning - science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas and crosscutting concepts - in order to meet the standard. This laboratory also makes interdisciplinary connections to STEM, Math CCSS and ELA CCSS to build the appropriate skills.

Five Senses and Information Processing Lab Stations Activity Learning Objectives
1. Describe the kind of sensory information received by different sensory organs.
2. Discuss how the brain processes and integrates information from different senses understand what is going on in the environment.
3. Discuss how storing sensory information as memories helps coordinate a future response to environmental stimuli.
4. Use a (diagrammatic) model to explain how sensory information is received by sensory organs, processed by the brain and used to coordinate a response.

Science Skills Station
Students will use a diagrammatic model to study how sensory organs are used to receive different kinds of sensory information and how that information is processed in the brain. Students will make predictions about how the brain (and nervous system) could use that information to coordinate an immediate or future response.

Narrative Station
Students will read a passage about the fives senses and sensory organs. Students will also read a passage about how the brain processes and integrates sensory information to respond to changes in the environment.

Assessment Station
At this station, students will answer questions about key terms and ideas relating to the five senses and processing sensory information. Students will have to employ lower, mid and higher order thinking skills to answer these questions.

Problem-Solving Station
Students will evaluate problems that arise when the brain cannot integrate sensory information from multiple senses. Specifically, students will study how the loss of one sense in hand-eye coordination, taste and smell and vision and hearing impacts the ability to understand and interact with the environment.

Synthesis/Summary Project
Students will have a choice of 11 projects. Refer to the SNAPs Lab Stations Best Practices and Setup Guide for directions and suggestions on how to conduct the project.
