About SNAPs Lab Stations Activities
SNAPs Lab Stations Activities require students to use science, math, literacy, problem-solving and engineering skills. They are designed to enhance students' understanding of scientific concepts and help students apply scientific ideas to the real world. Each station activity promotes skills so to develop students into proficient and competent scientific thinkers.

SNAPs lab activities have five components:
Science Skills Station to develop science skill proficiency
Narrative Station to build science literacy
Assessment Station to evaluate learning and understanding
Problem-Solving Station to foster engineering design
Synthesis/Summary Project to inspire higher-order learning

A description of the activities at each station in this particular lab is detailed below.

Next Generation Science Standards
This laboratory satisfies NGSS 4-LS4-3. It combines the three dimensions of science learning - science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas and crosscutting concepts - in order to meet the standard. This laboratory also makes interdisciplinary connections to STEM, Math CCSS and ELA CCSS to build the appropriate skills.

Generating a Wave Signal Lab Stations Activity Learning Objectives
1. Discuss the importance of waves in communication.
2. Explain how wave signals are used to code, transmit and receive information.
3. Compare and contrast the use of sound and light waves in generating, transmitted and receiving coded information.
4. Evaluate the use of Morse code (dots and dashes) and binary code (1s and 0s) to translate text messages and pictures.

Science Skills Station
Students will compare and contrast the coding, transmitting and receiving a text message with Morse code using light and sound waves. Students will code and transmit a message as well as receive and decode a message using patterns of sound or light wave signals.

Narrative Station
Students will read about how wave signals are used to code, transmit and receive information. Students will also read about the history of Morse code and how scientists applied the engineering design process to improve the use of Morse code.

Assessment Station
At this station, students will answer questions about key terms and ideas relating to the use of waves in generating, transmitting and receiving information. Students will have to employ lower, mid and higher order thinking skills to answer these questions.

Problem-Solving Station
Students will evaluate multiple solutions that enable us to generate, send and receive information via wave signals. Students will identify advantages and disadvantages to using Morse code, binary to transmit a text message or a picture.

Synthesis/Summary Project
Students will have a choice of 11 projects. Refer to the SNAPs Lab Stations Best Practices and Setup Guide for directions and suggestions on how to conduct the project.
