The 4 Quarter Debate format is designed to get students involved in a quick, detailed, free flowing debate on a controversial topic while using a minimal amount of in-class time.
--It is designed to mimic a 4 quarter football match where half of the class forms the pro side and half of the class forms the con. Extending the theme, there are 4 quarters, commercial breaks, and points assigned during a "post game show" where the teacher breaks down the highlights of the match.
--Research is done outside of class on heavily scaffolded worksheets and then the debate takes 1-2 class periods (depending upon the depth of research and detail of the post game show).
--Each team must present 3 coherent arguments (with supporting facts) while the opposing side rebuts (a different student must speak each time and their team-mates are given a chance to coach them)
--The game is scored during the "Post Game Show" where the teacher (who has been taking notes on the board) dissects the arguments piece by piece, awarding points for each coherent argument that has not been successfully rebutted.
