This document walks students through four readings of "Europe and America" by David Ignatow. They do a different task during each reading:
1. Make observations about the poem.
2. Identify and define unknown words in the poem.
3. Explain what the poem is literally about.
4. Interpret the deeper meaning of the poem.
This document also includes a compare/contrast graphic organizer to compare the experiences of the son with the experiences of the father in the poem.
This resource is intended to be used AFTER students have already learned how to apply the four-step process for poem interpretation; there is limited scaffolding in this resource.
