March 2nd is the day for kids all across America to read, read, read! Are you looking for some fun ways to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss? As you celebrate Read Across America Day (or week!), here are four STEM challenges that are sure to engage your students and enhance the festivities! The activities can stand alone, or can be paired with some of the birthday author's best loved tales.
The first task, The Very Best Nest, challenges students to build a nest that will protect an egg from a crushing weight.
The second task, Turtle Tower, challenges students to stack bottle caps to build the tallest tower.
The third task, His Royal HIGHness, challenges students to balance a king on two straws.
The last task, UPward and ONward, challenges students to make a "hot air" balloon, and discover the best way to move it along a course without touching it.
Each challenge comes with a material list, a printable student direction card, teacher directions, and a printable student recording page. The Turtle Tower activity also comes with printable turtles, and the Royal HIGHness activity comes with a printable king character.
