This is a great activity to use when exploring different fictional genres. Students look at 2 different sets of 3 pictures to determine the genre those pictures represent, and then draw their own 4th picture that matches. Underneath the 4-square charts students are prompted to provide evidence for their thinking by explaining why they matched the pictures to the genre they chose. A few extension activities are suggested on the answer key.
Teachers could have students complete this independently, in pairs or in small groups, as either a formative or summative assessment of their understanding of fictional genres.
