My TOEFL students kept bugging me for "Vocabulary Lists" so I prepared some lists for them. This file has a total of 80 intermediate-advanced words and idiomatic expressions, with definitions and example sentences taken from newspaper stories. If you're in a pinch for vocabulary for your class, these lists might be useful for you. While I chose these words for my TOEFL students, I believe they should be useful too for high school or college-bound students.
Theoretically, these lists could last you for up to a semester, if you wish to go over just five words per week. You could get students to construct their own example sentences using these words, to make sure they understand how each word is used.
Note: These 16 pages include just vocabulary, definitions, and example sentences. There are no written exercises included. You may test your students by getting them to explain to you what certain words mean or get them to construct sample sentences to show they've understood those words' meanings. You could also, for example, prepare your own test sheet and get students to write out definitions/synonyms/example sentences for the words that you've chosen.
