This packet will help each of your students track their independent reading progress toward reaching their 40 book goal for the school year, Donalyn Miller-style!
Donalyn is very clear in "The Book Whisperer" that this challenge should be just that, a challenge, and should in no way interfere with growing your students' love of reading. That being said, let me just make a few quick points. I look at this packet as the ultimate challenge for my readers, but I in no way require any part of it. For me, the primary goal of the 40 book challenge is to push my students to read more, and read widely. This packet encourages students to try a variety of genres, and simply asks them to respond with one sentence about their book. I did write these response sentence prompts with the purpose of trying to get students to answer questions across the CCSS. However, if a student just writes down the title and author of a book they've finished, I totally accept that. I also accept an alternative response sentence, if a student wishes to write something different. Remember, the goal with the 40 book challenge is not to make reading more work for your students - it's to push them to read more, and read widely.
